Annan Disappointed in Slow 1)Deployment of Liberia Peacekeepers
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has expressed disappointment at the slow pace of deployment of peacekeepers to Liberia.
Mr. Annan says he expected the arrival of a 2)vanguard force of about 1,500 peacekeeping troops from ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, by the end of the month.
Then, he says, Liberian President Charles Taylor would leave the country. When that happens, he says the United States would send 3)reinforcements to join the ECOWAS troops and a longer-term United Nations force would be established.
But the secretary general says he is troubled by delays in carrying out the plan to end the Liberian conflict.
"That is very worrying, because the longer we delay the deployment, the more dangerous the situation gets," he said. "So I have asked my military advisors and other officers to be in touch with the ECOWAS forces, with the U.S. and see what can be done to accelerate their deployment." He said.
Mr. Annan made his remarks following recent trips to West Africa and to Washington, where he met with President Bush. He says that progress has been made. Mr. Annan says that an understanding has been reached that ECOWAS, the United Nations and the United States have a role to play in Liberia.
However, U.S. officials continue to work on the details of sending a possible and limited U.S. force to the country, which was established by former U.S. slaves in the 19th century. U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has met with members of the 4)Senate to discuss the plan.
On political issues in Liberia, Secretary General Annan says that talks are continuing in Ghana to work on a two-year 5)transitional government for Liberia to 6)stabilize the situation, pave the way for 7)disarmament and prepare for elections.
He says the international community continues to wait for Mr. Taylor, who is under 8)indictment for war crimes, to 9)step down and go to Nigeria.
"And he has made a 10)commitment not only to his African 11)peers but to the whole world and one is expecting him to 12)honor that commitment," said the U.N. chief of President Taylor. "So at this stage, we are acting on the assumption and the expectation that he will step down and leave office."
Meanwhile, as a relative calm has 13)prevailed in Liberia's capital, Monrovia, a seven member U.N. assessment team is investigating the possible return of United Nations staff and aid workers.

British Prime Minister to Address US Congress
Had the war in Iraq, with the 1)ensuing controversy over 2)intelligence used to 3)justify it not occurred, Tony Blair would probably receive an even warmer welcome than the one he is likely to get on Capitol Hill.
4)Lawmakers in Congress remember that in the days after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, Mr. Blair was among the first foreign leaders to express 5)condolences to Americans.
In January 2002, he came to Washington to be present during President Bush's first post-attack State of the Union Address. Peter King, a New York Republican who 6)sponsored a House 7)resolution to give Mr. Blair a congressional gold medal, remembers.
"And that evening President Bush said, 'Once again we are joined together in a great cause, and we are so honored the British Prime Minister has crossed an ocean to show his unity of purpose with America. Thank you for coming, friend.' And indeed, Tony Blair has been a friend of the United States, and just as important as that he has been a friend and supporter of democratic values, he realizes the 8)unique nature of the 9)bonds between the United States and Britain and indeed between the United States and Europe," said Mr. King.
However, when Congressman King made that statement, Mr. Blair had already been under intense pressure for weeks from government 10)inquiries into information used to justify British participation in the Iraq war.
In House debate on honoring Mr. Blair, lawmakers praised him for his leadership in helping to 11)craft a peace 12)settlement in Northern Ireland and his cooperation in the war on terror, as well as in Afghanistan and Iraq.
However, some warned against giving him a congressional honor at a time when he faced intense 13)scrutiny on the Iraq intelligence issue, saying it would appear to be "14)propping up" an 15)embattled politician.
Massachusetts Democrat Ed Markey said Mr. Blair deserved credit for acting as a 16)moderating force in the months leading up to the Iraq war.
"But for Tony Blair's 17)insistence, President Bush would have never gone to the United Nations," he said. "It was he, Tony Blair, who made the 18)pre-condition to his support that the United States would go to the United Nations in order to secure a vote, and for that he deserves enormous credit."
On the eve of Prime Minister Blair's visit, Congressman Markey and 40 other Democrat members of the House sent a letter to President Bush.
In it, they urge the president to ask Mr. Blair to turn over what they call "all relevant intelligence" about 19)alleged Iraqi attempts to obtain 20)uranium from Africa, saying this would be an opportunity "for both leaders to 21)come clean with the American people and the world".
Before leaving for Washington, Mr. Blair again defended British information about Iraqi uranium purchase attempts, saying London had solid intelligence separate from other information.
Lawmakers expect the British prime minister's speech to Congress to focus on 22)enduring bonds between the United States and Britain, and the need to persevere in Iraq, Afghanistan and in the war on terror.
Meanwhile, back to the gold medal, Prime Minister Blair will not be receiving it on this trip, as many had assumed. It takes several months for a medal to be struck. Also, the House and Senate-approved resolution has only just been sent to President Bush for his signature.
Congressional 23)staffers say he will likely return later this year to receive the honor.

Iraqi 1)Governing Council Delegation Urges International Support From UN
A delegation representing the new Iraqi Governing Council has called for international support during a special Security Council session on Iraq.
Adnan Pachachi served as an Iraqi foreign minister before Saddam Hussein 2)came to power. Now as a member of the new 25 member Iraqi governing council, he has assured the Security Council that the 3)brutality of the Hussein regime will never return to Iraq.
But he says a long list of challenges lie ahead. In presenting the Iraqi group's vision, he listed as priorities restored security, the appointment of ministers and the reopening of Iraqi embassies. He also discussed the need for a revived economy, the establishment of a constitutional congress and a 4)tribunal to 5)prosecute past injustices.
To a translator, Mr. Pachachi appealed for international support.
"The challenge that is facing us is enormous, indeed, and the responsibilities of the Governing Council are too many, difficult and 6)diverse," he said. "One can not underestimate the great responsibility born by members of this council."
Mr. Pachachi was joined by two members of the Governing Council, a mid-level official from the Hussein government, Akila al-Hashemi, and the head of a U.S.-supported group of Iraqi 7)exiles, Ahmed Chalabi.
During a news conference that followed the Security Council session, Mr. Chalabi told reporters that Saddam Hussein had actively developed weapons of mass destruction. He said that the U.S.-led coalition has only recently begun a serious search for concealed weapons.
Secretary General Kofi Annan welcomed the creation of the Iraqi Council. But he and other diplomats say the goal remains a restoration of security, the early end of the military occupation and the formation of an internationally recognized representative government.
"Meanwhile, it is vital that the Iraqi people should be able to see a clear 8)timetable with a specific 9)sequence of events leading to the full restoration of 10)sovereignty as soon as possible," he said.
Mr. Annan's Special Representative to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, urged the international community, the Iraqi people and countries in the region to support the new Iraqi Governing Council.
"11)Credibility, you do not acquire over night. I believe this [Governing] Council is as representative as it can be under the circumstances," he said. "Tell me who is missing in that council "
Two protesters briefly disturbed the Security Council meeting on Iraq, shouting that the Iraqi Governing Council quote "is illegal". In his remarks, U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte described the presence of the Iraqi delegation as a sign that freedom has returned to Iraq. But France and Russia, who had opposed the Iraq War, were among several council members to 12)underscore the need of the U.S.-led Coalition to restore law and order.

Sao Tome 1)Coup Leaders Move to Establish New Government
Leaders of the military coup in the tiny West African nation of Sao Tome and Principe say they are 2)dissolving all state 3)bodies and setting up a military government. The coup comes as the island state is about to 4)reap its first 5)revenues from 6)offshore oil fields.
In a statement read by a 7)journalist on state 8)media Wednesday, 9)renegade soldiers said they carried out their coup in the 10)pre-dawn hours to reverse the country's economic and social decline.
The statement also ordered all members of the parliament and the government to report to police stations. The renegades appealed to the international community not to intervene, 11)even as diplomats in the capital, Sao Tome, tried to act as 12)mediators.
The former colonial power, Portugal and neighboring Nigeria immediately condemned the coup and called for the return of 13)constitutional order. Nigeria also warned the coup leaders against endangering the lives of Nigerian citizens.
The soldiers have already 14)detained all top members of the government, except the foreign affairs minister, who is in Portugal, and President Fradique de Menezes, who is on a private visit to Nigeria. Portuguese officials have called on all residents in Sao Tome to remain inside their homes until the situation is 15)clarified.
Machine-gun 16)wielding 17)mutineers have also taken control of government buildings, state media, the central bank and the airport. No injuries were reported.
The former Portuguese colony, which is made up of small islands, has a population of about 150,000 people, and depends mostly on fishing and international aid.
But political instability has increased in recent years since discoveries showed the country may have vast oil reserves.
The 18)auctioning of 19)drilling permits for several Gulf of Guinea oil blocks jointly owned with Nigeria was expected to net an initial $100 million for the islands by next year.
Some studies suggest Sao Tome and Principe, which is one of the world's poorest countries, could have up to four billion 20)barrels of 21)crude oil in its territorial waters.
The de Menezes government had recently invited the U.S. military to establish a naval base on the islands to protect growing American oil interests in West Africa.

This includes the two large statues of Buddha in central Bamiyan Province.
Palestinian demonstrators have clashed with Israeli troops near Ramallah in the West Bank. The demonstrators were protesting the Israeli blocking of movement in and out of their city. Ramallah is the main Palestinian business and political center. Several hundred protestors briefly seized an Israeli army guards station. Israeli soldiers fired rubber bullets and regained control of the area. Israeli officials say they must block Ramallah to prevent Palestinian militants from preparing attacks against Israel. The United States, Russia and the European Union have called on Israel to end its blocking of Palestinian towns. They say the move is increasing tensions in the area.
In Washington President Bush has met with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori at the White House. Mr. Mori said he will take steps to restore Japan's economy. The Prime Minister said he will seek to increase foreign investment in Japan and deal with bad loans made by banks. White House officials say the two leaders discussed Mr. Bush's tax-cut proposal and efforts to limit the spread of weapons in Asia. On Monday in Tokyo, the Japanese Central Bank decided to lower interest rates to near zero in an effort to help the economy.
The United States is expelling at least 50 Russian diplomats. American officials say the move is in reaction to the reported spying for the Russians by an agent of The Federal Bureau of Investigation. Secretary of States Colin Powell met with the Russian ambassador in Washington on Wednesday to say that the diplomats must leave the country. Some of the Russian diplomats must leave immediately. There has been no official reaction yet from the Russian government.

But he said the mistakes on the Taiwan issue could be harmful for the United States, China or Taiwan. The Chinese leader told the Washington Post newspaper that selling weapons to Taiwan could lead to war in East Asia. He said arm sales to Taiwan would only make the problem worse.
Arab leaders have ended their two-day meeting in Amman. The leaders agreed to set up a committee led by King Abdullah of Jordan to try to improve the relations between Iraq and Kuwait. On another issue, the leaders expressed support for the creation of Arab economic union. And they call for a special meeting in Cairo later this year to discuss economic issues. President Bush has expressed regrets for the apparent lost of Chinese pilot in the crash Sunday between American and Chinese military planes. The pilot's plane was lost after the crash over the South China Sea. Mr. Bush also expressed his sympathy to the pilot's family. American Secretary of State Cothen Poller made the similar statement Wednesday. China is holding the 24 member crew of the American navy spy plane. It landed on China's Hainan island after the crash. China is demanding the United States accept blame for the crash and apologize for it. President Bush has refused, He has repeatedly said the American plane did nothing wrong.
South Korea says it is withdrawing its ambassador to Japan. South Korea is protesting a recently approved Japanese history book for schools that it says does not deal honestly with the action of Japan during World War II. A South Korea Foreign Ministry official said the ambassador is to return to Seoul for meeting about how South Korea should deal with the textbook issue. The official said the withdrawal of the ambassador was temporary.
China has promised to release the crewmembers of the damaged United States military plane. China has held the 24 crewmembers on Hainan Island since April 1st. President Bush says the incident was a difficult one for both the United States and China. He said he looks forward to welcoming home the crew. In Beijing American Ambassador to China Joseph Prueher said the agreement was the product of intense diplomatic efforts on both sides. In the letter the United States expressed regrets over the loss of the Chinese pilot whose plane crashed with the American military plane. The government also said it is sorry the spy plane entered the Chinese air space without permission. That happened that the American plane made an emergency landing. American official say a passenger plane has left the Pacific territory of Guam and is flying to Hainan to pick up the crew and bring them to Guam. The crew will then fly to Hawaii on a military plane. European and Asian countries have welcome the news that china has agreed to release the crew of the American plane. Reports say Russia's foreign ministry has said it is pleased that the dispute between the United States and China has ended. British and German officials has similar reactions to the news.
The administration says President Bush has not yet decided about restarting intelligence gathering flights near china. A white house spokesman says the president is waiting for a report from the defense department. The spokesman says the report will include the opinion of military officials about using navy fighter planes to protect future flights. American and Chinese negotiators will meet in Beijing Wednesday to discuss the American flights. The events followed the crash April, 1st between an American spy plane and a Chinese fighter.
The Israeli army has seized some Palestinian controlled parts of the Gaza strip. This followed a major attack on Palestinian security position during the night. The moves are in reaction to Palestinian shelling of an Israeli town on Monday. The Palestinian group Hamas has taken responsibility for the shelling. An Israeli general says troops will stay in the recaptured area for as long as it takes to end such attacks. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat called the Israeli raids and its reoccupation of some Palestinian land an unforgivable crime. Israeli troops withdrew from two thirds of Gaza in 1994 as part of a peace agreement.
Chinese and American diplomats have ended a first day of meeting in Beijing. They discussed the recent crash of an American spy plane and a Chinese fighter. There was no sign of compromise. The Chinese delegation leader was reported as saying his government can prove the United States was responsible for the crash. The United States has blamed the Chinese fighter pilot who was lost at sea. American officials are demanding the return of the spy plane. The talks are to continue Thursday.
The song is called "You Send Me". It was written and sung by a young singer and songwriter Sam Cooke. During the later 1950's and early 60's, Sam Cooke was one of the biggest stars in the music industry. His smooth voice and musical style were popular with both blacks and whites. Although Sam Cooke died years ago, his influence still is present in today's music.
Sam Cooke was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1931. He grew up in Chicago Illinois. His father was a minister in a baptist church. Sam started singing religious music when he was only 15 years old. When he was 19 he became the lead singer of a famous gospel singing group called the Soul Stirrers. In 1950 he began writing and recording for the Soul Stirrers. During his 6 years with the group Cooke brought his own kind of expression to gospel music. He became gospel music's biggest star. His good looks and singing abilities made him very popular among women, both young and old.
One of the goals of American education officials is to have all public schools connected to the Internet computer system and have computers for all students. Government studies show that in 1994 only thirty-five percent of American public schools were connected to the Internet. Last year, that number reached eighty-nine percent.
Virginia Polytechnic Institute adn State University is a large university in the southern state of Virginia. Officials at Virginia Tech say computers are very important to a student's education.
All students at Virginia Tech have been required to have a computer since 1998.
Each student's living area at Virginia Tech has the necessary wires to link a computer to the Internet. The students can send and receive electronic mail, use the World Wide Web part of the Internet and link with other universities, all without leaving their room. They can also use their computers to send electronic copies of their school work to their teachers. And they can search for books in the school's huge library.
Most major American universities and colleges strongly urge or require new students to have a computer. Most colleges and universities also have large rooms where students can use computers for class work.
American high schools also have computers. Many have their own areas on the World Wide Web. If you have a computer you can learn about Fremont Union High School in Sunnyvale, California, for example. Its Web site provides information about the school, the teachers and their electronic mail addresses. It also lists student events and organizations.
Young children also use computers in school. Smoketree Elementary School, in Lake Havasu, Arizona is a good example. The school also has a World Wide Web site. It tells about the school and the teachers and has an area for young children. These young children use computers in school to learn numbers and letters. They also learn how to use the computers they will need later in their education.
Recent studies have provided new information about tow popular vitamins and their effects on the heart.
A study in the British medical publication The Lancet says vitamin C may reduce high blood pressure. Scientists from Boston University in Massachusetts and Oregon State University studied about forty people whose blood pressure was higher than normal. All the people continued to take their normal blood pressure medicines during the test period. Half of the people also took five hundred milligrams of vitamin C each day. The other half took an inactive substance.
After one month, the blood pressure of the people taking vitamin C was reduced by about nine percent.
The blood pressure of the other group was reduced by almost three percent. The researchers were not sure why vitamin C had this effect on blood pressure. They said more studies are needed to find out.
Other new studies report about Vitamin E. Earlier research suggested this vitamin could reduce the chance of heart attacks. A new study found no evidence of this. Salim Yusuf of Hamilton General Hospital in Ontario, Canada led the study. It was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Researchers studied the health of more than nine thousand five hundred people who had an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Half of the people took four hundred international units of vitamin E every day. The others took an inactive substance.
All the people also took either a drug to lower blood pressure or another inactive substance. After four years, the researchers found that the drug to lower blood pressure was effective in preventing heart attacks and strokes. Vitamin E was not. Other recent studies have shown the same result. Researchers in Italy reported in August that vitamin E had no effect on more than eleven thousand heart attack survivors.
Some doctors say these studies show that it is useless to give vitamin E to people already suffering heart disease. Other doctors say they would no t stop their patients from taking the vitamin. However, doctors say the best way to reduce the chance of a heart attack is to eat low fat foods, exercise and stop smoking cigarettes.
The American space agency reports that the Hubble Space Telescope is once again producing extremely clear pictures of objects in deep space. The new photographs were taken from January Tenth to January Thirteenth. That was when the space telescope began to work again.
NASA officials had to temporarily halt the work of the space telescope in November. The fourth of the six gyroscopes on the telescope had failed. The gyroscopes are used to aim the telescope. It needs three gyroscopes to aim correctly. NASA engineers placed the telescope in a safe position to protect it until repairs could be made. The space telescope was not able to send pictures or other information during that period.
The crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery repaired the Hubble telescope in December. The repairs included replacing the failed gyroscopes, and adding a new computer and new recording equipment. The astronauts also added new material to protect the twelve ton space telescope from dust and the heat of the Sun.
Ed Weiler is the NASA Associate Administrator for Space Science. He said the repairs to Hubble have produced excellent results.
Mr. Weiler said the repair work done by the astronauts made the Hubble Space Telescope better than new. He said that the new pictures are proof that it is extremely important NASA is able to send humans into space.
Great changes have taken place in family life because of science and industry. In the past, when more Americans lived on farms, the typical family had many children. In a farm family, parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Often too, uncles and aunts lived nearby. But when industry became more important than agriculture in American life, families became smaller because industry requires workers were ready and able to move off the land and to move again whenever necessary. And large families cannot be moved from place to place as smaller families can. So at present people tend to have smaller families. In the future, because of industrialization, a typical family will be required to move even more often than now. So families will be even smaller. The typical family may remain childless and consists of only a man and a woman. A small number of families may take child raising as their chief work. They raise other people's children, leaving those families free to move from job to job.
Last month, American writer Stephen King published a new story called "Riding The Bullet". It is about a young man who has to find a way home from college to see his sick mother. Some very scary things happen to him along the way. Critics say it is a pretty good story. But that is not why "Riding The Bullet" has become so famous.
The most interesting thin about "Riding the Bullet" is that you can only read it on a computer. The story will never be published on paper like a traditional book. Interested readers could not print a copy of it. They had to read it on their computer screens, in electronic form. So publishers call such writing "e - books".
The Stephen King e - books was released on the Internet computer system on March fourteenth. Nearly four hundred thousand copies were sold or requested during the first twenty - four hours. Many people had a great deal of trouble getting the e - book because of the great demand. The price was two - dollars and fifty cents. But some Internet bookstores were offering it for free. That probably increased the demand. Also, Stephen King is one of the most popular writers in America.
"Riding The Bullet" is not the first e - book ever offered. Reports say hundreds of books are for sale on the Internet in a similar way. But Mr. King's book is the most popular. Critics say that is because Stephen King has loyal readers who to read all his books as soon as they can.
Publishers say the success of the Stephen King e - book shows that electronic publishing has a real future. Officials of the publishing company Simon and Schuster are talking to other writers about doing the same thing.
That could be a good thin or a bad thing. Experts say it raises many questions. Should a writer be permitted to publish an e - book without using a publishing company What will books look like in the future Will they become part of our computers Publishers disagree about the answers to those questions. But Stephen King still supports the traditional printed book. He says he does not believe anything will replace it, at least not in his lifetime.
The United States has ordered its warships in the Persian Gulf to leave their ports. American officials say there is a believable threat of terrorism . They say the threat may be linked to American charges against 14 people Thursday. The charges are related to the 1996 bombing of a building in Saudi Arabia(沙特阿拉伯) where American military workers lived. The State Department has warned Americans throughout the world that there is an increased risk of terrorism. The government also announced the temproray closing of the United States embassies in Baruch(巴林) and Senegal(塞内加尔).
Arab Television says the suspected terrorist Osama Bin Laden is threatening to launch major strikes against the United States and Israeli targets. A reporter for television channel MBC, says he talked to Mr. Bin Laden at Afghanistan on Thursday. The reporter says Mr. Bin Laden spoke of a big surprise within two weeks. The reporter says the statement meant there would be an attempt to strike against the American and Israeli targets throughout the world. On Friday, the United States ordered its military ships in the Persian Gulf out of the sea.
A severe ocean storm has killed more than 70 people in south-eastern China. At least 80 people are reported missing. Official in Fujian province said the storm hit land Saturday near the coastal Fuzhou. They say it caused at least 400 million US$ in damages. It destroyed tens of thousands of hectares of farmland and thousands of tons of grain. The storm hit Taiwan earlier, at least 12 people died there. Several more are missing.
A Story of Christmas

It was just a few days until Christmas in San Francisco, and the shopping downtown was starting to get to us. I remember crowds of people waiting impatiently for slow moving buses and streetcars on those little cement islands in the middle of the street. Most of us were loaded down with packages, and it looked like many of us were beginning to wonder if all those countless friends and relatives actually deserved so many gifts in the first place. This was not the Christmas spirit I'd been raised with.
When I finally found myself virtually shoved up the steps of a jammed streetcar, the idea of standing there packed like a sardine the whole way home was almost more than I could take. What I would have given for a seat! I must have been in some kind of exhausted daze because as people gradually got off, it took me a while to notice that there was room to breathe again.
Then I saw something out of the corner of my eye. A small, dark-skinned boy – he couldn't have been more than five or six – tugged on a woman's sleeve and asked, "Would you like a seat " he quietly led her to the closest free seat he could find. Then he set out to find another tired person. As soon as each rare, new seat became available, he would quickly move through the crowd in search of another burdened woman who desperately needed to rest her feet.
When I finally felt the tug on my own sleeve, I was absolutely dazzled by the beauty in the little boy's eyes. He took my hand, saying, "Come with me," and I think I'll remember that smile as long as I live. As I happily placed my heavy load of packages on the floor, the little emissary of love immediately turned to help his next subject.
The people on the streetcar, as usual, had been studiously avoiding each other's eyes, but now they began to exchange shy glances and smiles. A businessman offered a section of newspaper to the stranger next to him; three people stooped to return a gift that had tumbled to the floor. And now people were speaking to one another. That little boy had tangibly changed something – we all relaxed into a subtle feeling of warmth and actually enjoyed the trip through the final stops along the route.
I didn't notice when the child got off. I looked up at one point and he was gone. When I reached my stop I practically floated off the streetcar, wishing the driver a happy holiday, noticing the sparkling Christmas lights on my street in a fresh, new way. Or maybe I was seeing them in an old way, with the same open wonder I felt when I was five or six. I thought, "So that's what they mean by and a little child shall lead them…"

A Grain of Sand
William Blake/
To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild fllower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.
A Greek to Remember
Diogenes was a famous Greek philosopher of the fourth century B.C., who established the philosophy of cynicism. He often walked about in the daytime holding a lighted lantern, peering around as if he were looking for something. When questioned about his odd behavior, he would reply," I am searching for an honest man." Diogenes held that the good man was self-sufficient and did not require material comforts or wealth. He believed that
wealth and possessions constrained humanity's natural state of freedom. In keeping with his philosophy, he was perfectly satisfied with making his home in a large tub discarded from the temple of Cybele, the goddess of nature. This earthen tub, called a pithos, and formerly been used for holding wine or oil for the sacrifices at the temple. One day, Alexander the Great ,conqueror of half the civilized world, saw Diogenes sitting in this tub in the sunshine .So the king, surrounded by his countries, approached Diogenes and said," I am Alexander the Great." The philosopher replied rather contemptuously," I am Diogenes, the Cynic." Alexander then asked him if he could help him in any way." Yes," shot back Diogenes," don't stand between me and the sun." A surprised Alexander then replied quickly," If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes."
A Psalm of Life 人生礼颂
Herry Wadsworth Longfellow/
Tell me not in mournful numbers, 请别用哀伤的诗句对我讲;
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;人生的目标决不是坟墓;
Dust thou art , to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment , and not sorrow,
Is our destined and our way;也不是悲伤,
But to act, 实干
That much to-morrow.
Find us farther than to-day.
Art is long , and time is fleeting.
And our hearts , though stout and brave.
Still , like muffled drums , are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,在这辽阔的世界战场,
Be not like dumb,driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
Trust no future.howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,act in the living Present!
Let us,then,be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
下定决心,不管遭遇怎样;
Still achieving,still pursuing
Learn to labour and to wait.
Discovery 发现
Diane Ackerman/
The word "discovery" literally means, uncovering something that's hidden from view. But what really happens is a change in the viewer. The familiar offers comfort few can resist, and fewer still want to disturb. But as relatively recent inventions such as the telescope and microscope have taught us, the unknown has many layers. Every truth has geological strata, and you can't have an orthodoxy without a heresy. The moment a newborn opens its eyes, discovery begins. I learned this with a laugh one morning after delivering a calf. When it lifted up its fluffy head and looked at me, its eyes held the absolute bewilderment of the newly born. A moment before it had the even black nowhere of the womb, and suddenly its world was full of colour, movement and noise. I've never seen anything so shocked to be alive.
If I were a Boy Again
If I were a boy again, I would practice perseverance more often, and never give up a thing because it was or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer darkness. Perseverance can sometimes equal genius in its results. "There are only two creatures," says a proverb, "who can surmount the pyramids—the eagle and the snail." If I were a boy again, I would school myself into a habit of attention; I would let nothing come between me and the subject in hand. I would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. The habit of attention becomes part of our life, if we began early enough. I often hear grown up people say " I could not fix my attention on the sermon or book, although I wished to do so" , and the reason is, the habit was not formed in youth. If I were to live my life over again, I would pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory. I would strengthen that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion. It takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately; but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. It only needs early cultivation to become a power.
If I were a boy again, I would cultivate courage. "Nothing is so mild and gentle as courage, nothing so cruel and pitiless as cowardice," says a wise author. We too often borrow trouble, and anticipate that may never appear." The fear of ill exceeds the ill we fear." Dangers will arise in any career, but presence of mind will often conquer the worst of them. Be prepared for any fate, and there is no harm to be feared. If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerful side. Life is very much like a mirror: if you smile upon it, I smiles back upon you; but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return. Inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but of all that come in contact with it. " who shuts love out ,in turn shall be shut out from love." If I were a boy again, I would school myself to say no more often. I might write pages on the importance of learning very early in life to gain that point where a young boy can stand erect, and decline doing an unworthy act because it is unworthy. If I were a boy again, I would demand of myself more courtesy towards my companions and friends, and indeed towards strangers as well. The smallest courtesies along the rough roads of life are like the little birds that sing to us all winter long, and make that season of ice and snow more endurable. Finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if that were the sole purpose of life, I would, if I were a boy again, I would still try harder to make others happy.
Love Your Life 热爱生活
--Henry David Thoreau/享利.
However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poor-house. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man's abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace. The town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any. May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town; but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means. which should be more disreputable. Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends, Turn the old, return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.
The Flight of Youth
Richard Henry Stoddard/
There are gains for all our losses.
There are balms for all our pain; 我们所有的痛苦都能得到安慰;
But when youth,the dream,departs
It takes something from our hearts,
And it never comes again.
We are stronger, and are better,
Under manhood's sterner reign; 在严峻的成年生活驱使下;
Still we feel that something sweet
Following youth, with flying feet,
And will never come again.
Something beautiful is vanished,
And we sigh for it in vain; 我们枉自为此叹息;
We behold it everywhere,
On the earth, and in the air,
But it never comes again!
The Hare and the Tortoise
There was once a hare who was very pound of his running. "No one is as speedy as me!" he cried. "Would anyone like to race "
"No thanks!" laughed the other animals. "We know you can run faster than any of us."
But one little voice piped up politely behind him. ""I'll give you a race if you like, Mr. Hare, it said.
The hare turned around in surprise. Standing before him was a wrinkly old tortoise.
"Oh my!" replied the hare. "You make me tremble, Mr. Tortoise."
But the old tortoise was serious, so it was agreed that the two would race to the oak tree and back.
"On your marks! Get set! Go!" yelled the squirrel.
In a couple of seconds, the hare was nearly out of sight. The tortoise set off in his usual slow way.
When he reached the tree, the hare was so confident that he sat down to rest. But he soon fell fast asleep!
An hour later, he woke up and heard cheering in the distance. Leaping to his feet, he run as fast as his legs would carry him, but the tortoise's head bobbed over a line a whisker before the hare's.
"Being quick on your feet is a fine thing, Mr. Hare , but slow and steady wins the race." said Mr. Tortoise.
The Life I Desired
William Somerset Maugham
That must be the story of innumerable couples, and the pattern of life of life it offers has a homely grace. It reminds you of a placid rivulet, meandering smoothly through green pastures and shaded by pleasant trees, till at last it falls into the vast sea; but the sea is so calm, so silent, so indifferent, that you are troubled suddenly by a vague uneasiness. Perhaps it is only by a kink in my nature, strong in me even in those days, that i felt in such an existence, the share of the great majority, something amiss. I recognized its social value. I saw its ordered happiness, but a fever in my blood asked for a wilder course. There seemed to me something alarming in such easy delights. In my heart was desire to live more dangerously. I was not unprepared for jagged rocks and treacherous, shoals it I could only have change-change and the excitement of unforeseen.
The Little Match Girl
It was late on a bitterly cold snowy New Year's Eve. A poor little girl was wandering in the dark cold streets. She was bareheaded and barefooted. She certainly had had sleepers on when she left home but they were not much good for they were so huge. They had last teen worn by her mother and they fell off the poor little girl's feet when she was running across the street to avoid two carriages that were riding rapidly by. One of the shoes could not be found at all and the other was picked up by a boy who ran off with it saying that it would do for a cradle when he had children of his own. So the poor little girl had to go on with her little bare feet which were red and blue with the cold.
She carried a quantity of matches in her old apron and held a packet of them in her hand. Nobody had bought any of her matches during all the long day. Nobody had even given her a copper. The little creature was hungry and perishing with cold and she looked the picture of misery. The snowflakes fell upon her long yellow hair, which curled so prettily around her face, but she paid no attention to that.
Lights were shining from every window and there was a most delicious odor of roast goose in the streets fro it was New Year's Eve. she could not forgot that. She found a corner where one house projected a little beyond the next one and here she crouched, drawing up her feet under her. But she was colder than ever. She did not dare to go home for she had not sold any matches and had not earned a single penny. Her father would beat her. Besides, it was almost as cold at home as it was here. They only had the roof over them and the wind whistled through it although they stuffed up the biggest cracks with rags and straw. Her little hands were almost dead with cold. Oh, one little match would do some good There she'd pilled one out of the bundle and strike it on the wall to warm her fingers. She pulled one out. Rishhh! How it splattered, how it blazed! It burned with a bright clear flame, just like a candle when she held her hand round it. It was a very curious candle, too! The little girl fancied that she was sitting in front of a big stove wit polished brass feet and handles. There was a splendid fire blazing in it and warming her so beautifully, but what happened Just as she was stretching out her feet to warm them, the blaze went out, the stove vanished and she was left sitting with the end of a burned out match in her hand. She struck a new one. It burned, it blazed up, and where the light fell upon the wall it became transparent like gauze and she could see right through it into the room. The table was spread with a snowy cloth and pretty china. A roast goose stuffed with apples and prunes was steaming on it. And what was even better, the goose hopped from the dish with the carving knife and fork sticking in his back and it waddled across the floor. It came right up to the poor child and then… The match went out and there was nothing to be seen but the thick black wall. Again she lit another. This time she was sitting under a lovely Christmas tree. It was much bigger and more beautifully decorated than the one she's seen when she peeped through the glass doors at the rich merchant's house this very last Christmas. Thousands of lighted candles gleamed upon its branches and colored pictures such as she had seen in the shop windows looked down to her. The little girl stretched our both her hands towards them and out went the match. All the Christmas candles rose higher and higher till she saw that they were only the twinkling stars. One of them fell and made a bright strip of light across the sky. "Someone is dying", thought the little girl, for her old grandmother, the only person who had ever been kind to her, used to say "When a star falls, a soul is going up to God."
Now she struck another match against the wall and this time it was her grandmother who appeared in the circle of flame. She saw her quite clearly and distinctly, looking so gentle and happy. "Grandmother," cried the little creature, "oh, do take me with you! I know you will vanish when the match goes out. You will vanish like the warm stove, the delicious goose and the beautiful Christmas tree". She hastily struck a whole bundle of matches because she did so long to keep her grandmother with her. The light of the matches made it as bright as day. Grandmother had never before looked so big or so beautiful. She lifted the little girl up in her arms and they soared in a hallo of light and joy far far above the earth where there was no more cold, no hunger, no pain, for they were with God.
In the cold morning light, the little girl sat there, in the corner between the houses, with rosy cheeks and a smile on her face, dead frozen to death on the last night of the old year. New Year's Day broke on the little body still sitting with the ends of the burned out matches in her hand. "She must have tried to warm herself," they said. Nobody knew what beautiful visions she had seen, none what a hailer she had entered with her grandmother upon the glories of the new year.
The Little Mermaid
Long ago and far away, the King of the mer-people ruled all the lands under the sea. He had six beautiful mermaid daughters, who loved to play in the clear blue water. But they were not allowed to rise to the surface and look at the world where human beings lived.
"You are all much too young to leave the sea," said their grand mother. "But I will tell young strange tales of the world of human beings if you are very good."
As the Princesses grew up, they each swan up to view the outside world. At last it was they turn of the youngest Princess.
Above the waves, the sky was dark. As a great storm blew up, a ship was driven upon rocks near the shore and a young man was thrown into the water. The little mermaid brought him safely to shore, leaving him on a sandy beach.
The little mermaid hid and waited. Soon some girls came along the beach and found the young man.
"It's the Prince!" they cried.
"Where is the lovely girl who saved me " he asked. But no one knew.
The little mermaid swam sadly away. She had fallen in love with the handsome Prince.
"I shall visit the sea witch and ask for her help." She said.
"So you want to become human I shall take your voice as payment," cackled the witch. "But to be truly human man. If he chooses another, you will turn into sea foam before dawn."
So the little mermaid gave her lovely voice to the witch and became human. She joined the crowd at the Prince's palace and before long had become close to the close to the Prince. But without her voice, she could not tell him who she was.
One day the Prince said, "We are sailing to meet a beautiful Princess. I may marry her. "The little mermaid thought that her heart would break."
When the Prince met the lovely Princess, he was dazzled by her beauty. The wedding was planned to take place the next day.
The little mermaid wept.
"You can save yourself," cried her sisters from the sea, "if you kill the Prince!"
But the little mermaid loved him too much to do so and threw herself into the sea. But she did not turn into foam. She became spirit of the air and was happy at last.
